RootsMagic offers numerous ways to search for people in your file.
Search from Person Page
Person Search
"Search, Person List" – lets you search for people by name using RootsMagic Explorer
The RootsMagic Explorer makes it easy to find anyone in your database. You can find any person by simply typing their name, or by entering information about them (birth date, death place, occupation, etc), or by their relationship with someone else (parent, child, spouse or sibling).
You can view and edit any information about a person from the RootsMagic Explorer, or you can select a person to be displayed in the main view of RootsMagic.
•
"Search, Family List" – lets you search for people who have a spouse or children (or both) using the Family List dialog.
The Family List displays a list couples by Father and Mother and their marriage date, and lets you sort by any of these columns.
RootsMagic also has several other options to find specific people:
•
You set a root person so you can always return to this person from anywhere.
The root person is the one who is considered the starting person or central focus in the database. This may be yourself, your spouse, your child, or anyone else. You can change the root person at any time.
•
To set the root person, position the mouse over the name of a person in any of the Pedigree, Family, Descendants, or people views, click the right mouse button and select "Set as Root person" from the pop-up menu.
•
Use the "Search, Go to root person" command on the main menu, or press Ctrl+Home, to return to the root person. This command is especially useful if you get lost in your database and want to quickly return to the root person.
•
You can mark people using Bookmarks to go to them when desired.
RootsMagic allows you to set bookmarks for any people in your database. You can then quickly return to any of those people without having to search for them in your database. The bookmark sidebar is the Bookmark Manager within RootsMagic.

Highlight the person on the main screen, and press Ctrl+B, or do "Search, Bookmarks, Bookmark person" from the main menu.

Find Everywhere
Find Everywhere is available from the Search menu on the toolbar, and is a global search feature where you enter text, and RootsMagic searches everywhere in the file for that text. Find Everywhere will search for people, families, events, places, notes, sources, citations, media, to-do items, research logs, and more for matches to text within any one of their fields.
Just enter the text you want to search for. If you use more than one field (with the AND and OR options), the various text pieces must be in the same record (person, name, note, place, etc) for RootsMagic to select that record as a match. So if you search for:
Smith
AND
William
then RootsMagic will find names with both Smith and William in it.
If you want the case (capitalization) to match what you type, you can also check the "Match case" checkbox.
RootsMagic will display the results in a list broken down by the type of record the text was found in. It will show you the record, as well as the part of the record containing the text (which will be highlighted in red).
But the most powerful part of Find Everywhere is that each record found in the search will have a hotlink which you can click to actually edit the record which contains the text you were searching for.
