Editing Dates, Places, etc

To edit data fields, just click in the desired field. There are different types of edit fields:

  • Text fields - This is a simple text field for data like names. Just type what you want into the field.
  • Drop list fields - Clicking on a drop list field displays a list of options to select from. Just select the choice you want from the drop down menu. This is used for data like sex, proof, etc.
  • Check box fields - This is a checkbox for data that is either true or false. Just check the box if true, or leave it unchecked if false. This is used for fields like Living, Private, etc.
  • Place field - This works just like a text field, but it automatically displays matching places as you type. You can either just type the place or select the place from the drop list. The place field also has 2 buttons which open the place list and/or the gazetteer.
  • Selection field - This is a special field which opens up a form to select information. It is different from the drop list fields because it lets you select from a larger list of items than a simple drop list can display. This is used for fields like fact type.

Editing Notes, Sources, Media, Tasks, etc

To edit additional information about a fact (notes, sources, media, tasks, addresses, or witnesses), highlight the fact in the fact list, then click the desired button in the edit panel on the right side of the screen. You can also just click the icon for the desired item in the fact list itself.

Other Workflow

To edit a fact.

Double click on a person's name on the pedigree, family, or descendants view, or highlight the person’s name and press Enter or do Edit, Person from the main menu.

On the Edit Person window that opens, select the fact to which you want to make changes or additions. The fact fields, fact details buttons and sentence preview are displayed in the live-edit pane at the right.

Enter the information for the new fact Fact in the live-edit pane at the right side of the window. Some of these fields many not appear for a particular fact type.



o

Date – enter the date or dates and date modifiers for the event. RootsMagic allows a wide variety of date modifiers.

Place – Enter the place the event took place



o

Place details – Enter the name of the church, hospital, cemetery, etc., or address where the event occurred



o

Description – Enter additional details about the fact



o

Sort Date – Enter the date where you would like the event sorted in the fact list. This can be used when there is no known date, or when you wish to overrule the date entered



o

Proof – Assign (optionally) a proof value to indicate whether a fact, or relationship like spouse, father, and mother, has been proven, disproven, or disputed



o

Private – Check this box to denote that the fact is private, and would not appear in reports and charts, unless you specifically select the option to display the private data.



o

Primary – Check this box to tell RootsMagic



o

Name fields – The "alternate name" fact type has name fields (given, surname, prefix, suffix, and nickname) as well as a drop list to select the type of alternate name (also known as, immigrant, etc).



o

Ordinance status – LDS ordinance fact types have an "ordinance status" drop list to select from.



o

Live – The LDS baptism fact type allows you to choose whether the ordinance was a live or proxy one.

The following buttons appear in the person's live edit pane for facts letting you access the features directly:

Note – Highlight an event and click this button to add or change a note for this event. (If you want to add a general note for the person, not related to a specific event, click the Note button in the fact pane details). You can also click the box in the fact note column to edit the fact note.



o

Sources – Highlight an event and click this button to add or change a source for this event. (If you want to add a general source for the person, not related to a specific event, click the Sources button in the fact pane details). You can also click the box in the fact source column to edit the fact sources.



o

Share – Highlight an event and click this button to add or edit people who share, or were witnesses to, this event.



5.

Click Save to save your changes or additions made in the active pane, or click Cancel to discard any changes you’ve made.

Click Close to close the Edit Person window. Any changes made in the active pane are saved by this command.

You can resize the dialog by clicking and dragging the edges of the dialog. RootsMagic will remember the size and position the next time you open the dialog.
