Once a RootsMagic person has been matched to a person on FamilySearch, you may wish to compare the two and exchange information between RootsMagic and FamilySearch. To do so click on the FamilySearch icon for the person on the pedigree or family view.

A screen will appear displaying information about the person. If for some reason you need to unmatch your RootsMagic person from the displayed FamilySearch person, you can click the UnMatch button on this screen.

Information from RootsMagic will appear on the left, while information from FamilySearch will appear on the right, and facts and events will be lined up across from each other. Colors are used to visually describe how well the information matches your own.

*Green indicates an identical or near-identical match.
*Yellow indicates a close match.
*Red indicates a poor match.

The colors make is easy to spot good and poor matches without having to actually read the text of the records. To view more information about any of the facts, click on the "info" icon to the right of the fact.

Clicking the checkbox in front of a fact will bring up a screen with one or more options available for the fact. You can copy a fact from RootsMagic to FamilySearch, or from FamilySearch into RootsMagic, and you can also delete a fact from FamilySearch. When copying some facts from RootsMagic to FamilySearch you may choose between adding it as a new fact or replacing the existing fact. Some facts (like the basic birth, death, christening and burial) may only have one value on FamilySearch, so those will only give you the option to replace the fact if it already has a value on FamilySearch.

Choose what you want to do with the fact from the options list at the top of the screen that pops up. RootsMagic will display full details for the fact in both RootsMagic and FamilySearch (including contributor, reason, and sources) so that you may make an informed decision before committing to the change. Some options (like replacing or deleting an existing fact in FamilySearch) will also ask you to enter a reason why you are making that change.

RootsMagic 8 has a different file format and extension for database (.rmtree) and backup (.rmbackup) files. The RootsMagic 7 database (.rmgc) cannot be opened inside RootsMagic 8. The RootsMagic 7 database (.rmgc) file needs to be imported into RootsMagic 8 by creating a new file. The new database will then have the correct (.rmtree) file extension.

The RootsMagic 7 backup (.rmgb) needs to be restored inside of RootsMagic 8 by going to Files, Restore from backup. During the restore process it will create a new (.rmtree) file and leave the RootsMagic 7 backup file intact.

RootsMagic offers complete integration with FamilySearch Family Tree through the FamilySearch Person Tools screen. This screen is available for each person in the database and can be accessed by clicking the FamilySearch icon next to their name on the Person or Family views.

*Upload media - This lets you choose whether to upload your media items.
*Upload sources - This lets you choose whether to upload your sources.
*Upload notes - This lets you choose whether to upload your notes.
*Upload place details - If you mark this checkbox, RootsMagic will prepend the place details to the place before uploading it to Ancestry.
*Upload private facts - This lets you choose whether to upload private facts.

The dialog window will display the progress of your data transfer. The transfer time varies depending upon your internet speed, the size of your database, and the number of images you are uploading or downloading.

If you already have a tree on Ancestry, you will also be given the option to download it into a new, blank RootsMagic database. A list of trees that you own, as well as trees that have been shared with you with Editor rights will be displayed to select from. A dialog window will open if you need to create a new database for your download.

==Viewing RootsMagic and Ancestry Persons Side by Side==

When done, you will see the TreeShare window. The people online and in RootsMagic will be the same.

Changes can be made to your RootsMagic and/or your online tree. To compare and share the updates, click the Ancestry TreeShare button on the Publish page. Changes will be gathered and TreeShare will open. The name of the tree that you are connected to is displayed in the upper left corner. The name index appears in the far left panel of the TreeShare window. Above the name index is a filter to “Only show changed people”. Check this option to see a list of those people whose records have been changed or uncheck it to see a list of everyone in your database.

Select a name to see a comparison of the RootsMagic and Ancestry records. Green highlighting indicates that the information is identical. Yellow highlighting means the information is similar but not identical. Pink highlighting means it is new or different. When desired, click the “Edit RootsMagic person” button to open their “Edit person” window in RootsMagic. You can go directly to the person on your tree on Ancestry.com by clicking the “Show on Ancestry” button.

The process of sharing data is the same whether you are moving information from RootsMagic to your Ancestry Member Tree or vice versa. You have control over what facts to share and how to share them. Check the box by the data you want to share and an options list will appear, including options to add sources and media if applicable. After choosing to add a fact, it will appear in blue lettering in the other window to indicate that the update is pending. A list of trees that you own, as well as trees that have been shared with you with Editor rights will be displayed to select from. A dialog window will open if you need to create a new database for your download.

When done, you will see the TreeShare window. The people online and in RootsMagic will be the same.

Changes can be made to your RootsMagic and/or your online tree. To compare and share the updates, click the Ancestry TreeShare button on the Publish page. Changes will be gathered and TreeShare will open. The name of the tree that you are connected to is displayed in the upper left corner. The name index appears in the far left panel of the TreeShare window. Above the name index is a filter to “Only show changed people”. Check this option to see a list of those people whose records have been changed or uncheck it to see a list of everyone in your database.

Select a name to see a comparison of the RootsMagic and Ancestry records. Green highlighting indicates that the information is identical. Yellow highlighting means the information is similar but not identical. Pink highlighting means it is new or different. When desired, click the “Edit RootsMagic person” button to open their “Edit person” window in RootsMagic. You can go directly to the person on your tree on Ancestry.com by clicking the “Show on Ancestry” button.

The process of sharing data is the same whether you are moving information from RootsMagic to your Ancestry Member Tree or vice versa. You have control over what facts to share and how to share them. Check the box by the data you want to share and an options list will appear, including options to add sources and media if applicable. ==WebHints==
RootsMagic's WebHints are small indicators that a person in your file may have one or more records on Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, or Findmypast. If a hint exists for someone in your file, RootsMagic will display a light bulb (the WebHint) next to the person's name on the Pedigree or Family view.

To see the actual hints, just click the WebHint bulb. RootsMagic will display a summary of the available hints for all selected sites. The hints will be categorized by Pending, Confirmed, and Rejected. Pending hints are those that haven't been confirmed as belonging to that person, so they are usually the hints you haven't looked at yet. If you click on the Pending count for a provider, RootsMagic will display a list of the pending hints where you can view the record in more detail. If you confirm the record in Ancestry, MyHeritage or Findmypast, or attach the record to the person on FamilySearch, that hint will be recategorized as Confirmed. If you say the record doesn't belong to that person the hint will be categorized as Rejected.

The color of the WebHints bulb for a person will give you additional information.

From left to right they are:

If the bulb is yellow, it means there are pending hints waiting. If the bulb is blue it means that there are hints but they are all either confirmed or rejected already. And finally, if the bulb has a blue outline, it means RootsMagic is still searching or waiting for one (or more) of the other providers to respond.

To view the hints for a specific provider, just click the name of the provider in the WebHints list. Clicking WebHints for FamilySearch, MyHeritage, or FindMyPast will take you to the provider's website to view, confirm, or reject the hint. After a hint's status is changed on the providers website they need to push a status change back to us. Close the WebHint list and reopen to refresh the status. Response time may vary.

Clicking on [[RM8:WebHints#Ancestry_WebHints|Ancestry WebHints]] will take you to a screen in RootsMagic where you can view, accept, or reject hints, or even transfer data from the hint directly into RootsMagic without retyping.

There are a number of [[RM8:WebHint_Settings|options available for WebHints]], such as turning them on or off, confidence level, etc. The options will be different for each different provider.

#You will notice in the File Options window that there are fields for the FamilySearch user name and password (Tools>File Options>WebHints). The FamilySearch hints require you to be logged into FamilySearch, so if you don't enter a valid username and password in this area, you won't see any of the free FamilySearch hints.

Select a hint from the list in the upper left window. The source and a link to the image appear in the upper right panel. Data from your RootsMagic file is displayed in the lower left panel. Data from the Ancestry Record Hint is displayed in the lower right panel. As in other areas in RootsMagic, color coding is used to indicate similarities and differences between your record and the information in the source document.

Between the upper and lower sections are two sets of buttons. On the left, “Edit RootsMagic person” allows you to open the “Edit Individual” screen so that you can view and edit their data as desired. The “Show on Ancestry” takes you to the person’s “Facts” window on your Ancestry member tree. On the right are the buttons to “Accept”, “Reject” or mark the record as “Undecided” on Ancestry.com. Accepting a WebHint and adding data to RootsMagic does not affect your tree on Ancestry.com. Use TreeShare to move the data to your Ancestry member tree.

Clicking the checkbox by new data reveals options to add the event or update the existing event in RootsMagic. Selecting “Update…” will open a dialog window to choose exactly what you want to update.

The pending changes appear in blue lettering on the left (RootsMagic) window. You can cancel pending changes by clicking the “Cancel changes” button. After selecting the events and people that you want to add to your database, click the “Accept changes” button. You can only move facts from the Ancestry WebHint to the record in RootsMagic.

===Other Member Trees (Ancestry Member Tree Hints)===

The process for viewing and transferring information from Ancestry Member Trees into RootsMagic works the same as Record Hints. Select a hint from the Other Member Trees section in the upper left corner of the window. The name of the tree, the profile person, and a link to view the tree online are in the upper right corner. Next is the row of buttons to edit, show the person’s records in RootsMagic or on Ancestry.com. The buttons to Accept, Reject or keep the record marked as Undecided on Ancestry are on this same row. Pending facts will be displayed in blue. Options for moving or updating a fact from Ancestry into RootsMagic will appear when you click into the checkbox by the fact. You can only move data from Ancestry into RootsMagic.

===Photos and Stories Hints===

Scroll down to the bottom of the hints list to see Photo and Stories Hints. The photo or the title of the story will be displayed in the upper right window. The photo, but not the story title, will also appear in the lower right window. To add the photo or story to the person’s record in RootsMagic, click “Attach photo” or “Attach story”.

The image or icon will appear in the person’s Media Album. The image or story will be saved to a media folder with the same name and in the same place as your database.

The RootsMagic 7 database (.rmgc) file needs to be imported into RootsMagic 8 by creating a new file. The new database will then have the correct (.rmtree) file extension.

The RootsMagic 7 backup (.rmgb) needs to be restored inside of RootsMagic 8 by going to Files, Restore from backup. During the restore process it will create a new (.rmtree) file and leave the RootsMagic 7 backup file intact.

== [[RM8:Ancestry_Login|Ancestry unable to login]] ==
When I click on Ancestry TreeShare login nothing happens or I receive a message my password is incorrect.

In a main view use the key combo Ctrl+Shift+U and select "Reset Program Settings". Close and reopen RM8. Go to Settings>WebHints and click on "Reset TreeShare". Then go to Publish>Ancestry TreeShare and see if you can login. If you are using two-factor verification append the code received to the end of the password, without any spaces.

If you are still unable to login temporarily turn off your firewall, antivirus and internet filtering software to see if one of them is blocking RM8 access to the internet. Then adjust their settings.

== [[RM8:FamilySearch_Login|FamilySearch unable to login]] ==

In a main view use the key combo Ctrl+Shift+U and select "Reset Program Settings". Close and reopen RM8. Then go to Publish>FamilySearch Central and see if you can login.

Temporarily turn off your firewall, antivirus and internet filtering software to see if one of them is blocking RM8 access to the internet. Then adjust their settings.

FamilySearch's FT API does not currently support two-factor authentication. If you have that turned on with FamilySearch you will need to remove it.

== FamilySearch not accepting changes ==

When making changes the FamilySearch Person Tool may look like nothing happened. It just means RootsMagic refreshed before FamilySearch could send the changes. In that case click on the refresh button to reload both panels and display the updates made. The refresh button is located near the top of the Share Data tab, next to the UnMatch button.

== [[RM8:Reset_Registration_Key|Clearing the Registration key]] ==

The RootsMagic registration key can be cleared by opening RootsMagic in a main view and using the key combo Ctrl+Shift+U, selecting "Reset Registration Information", then closing the program to clear it. If you receive a message that prevents you from opening RootsMagic...
You can manually clear the registration key by deleting the RootsMagicApp.xml file.

== Has the RootsMagic App for iOS devices been updated ==

The RootsMagic App has not been updated to accept the RootsMagic 8 database (.rmtree) file. Instead we have created an export option inside RootsMagic 8 that will send the database with the correct (.rmgc) file extension for the RootsMagic App. Go to File, Export Data, Dropbox to upload the file to Dropbox which then can be downloaded by the RootsMagic mobile app for iOS devices.

== Will Personal Historian and Family Atlas work with RootsMagic 8 ==
The answer is YES! If you select the GEDCOM File import option in both programs. Inside of RootsMagic 8 go to File, Export Data, GEDCOM to create the file needed to import into Personal Historian and Family Atlas.

To add people to your RootsMagic database, you can either:
*Click the plus sign button on the People page toolbar. A menu will allow you to add and individual, spouse, parents, or child. The first option adds an unlinked person to the database.
*Click a person box on the pedigree or family view to add a spouse, child, father, or mother.

== Adding an unlinked individual ==
Click the plus button on the People page toolbar, then select Individual from the menu to add a new unlinked person to the database. This is how you would add the first person to your file.

#You can enter the following information on the Add Individual form:
#*Given names – Enter the first and middle names of the person you are adding.
#*Surname – Enter the last name of the person you are adding. For females, enter their maiden (unmarried) name.
#*Prefix – Enter any text that should come before the person’s name (like Dr.).
#*Suffix – Enter any text that should follow the person’s name (like Jr. or III).
#*Nickname – Enter any nickname that the person was known by.
#*Sex – Select the person’s sex from the drop list, or type M for male, F for female, or U for unknown if you are not sure of the person's sex at the time.
#*Living - set by default to living. If a birth date is over 105 years or a death fact is added the living flag will automatically be unchecked when saved.
#*Dates – Enter the birth, death, and burial dates (if known). You can enter the dates in almost any format, and RootsMagic will convert them to a standard format for you. You can also select the [[RootsMagic_8:Calculators|Date Calculator]] if necessary.
#*Places – Enter the birth, death, and burial places (if known). As you begin typing, RootsMagic will begin filling the place in for you, and display a drop list of potential matches. When your place name appears, select it from this list. If you have entered the place somewhere else in the program, you can click the place list button to open the Place list with all the places already entered in the program. Click the desired place in the list to enter it quickly into the field. See [[RootsMagic_8:Place_List|Place List]] for more details on the Place List.
#*Death Description – Enter the cause of death if known.
#Click OK to create the new person, or click Cancel to close the dialog without adding the individual.
#RootsMagic will compare the person you add with people already in the database. If it finds any matches, it will bring up the [[RootsMagic_8:Adding_People#Possible_duplicates|Possible Duplicates]] dialog box warning that you may have already entered this person. You may continue adding the new person if the person doesn't match any of the existing people, or you may cancel (so you don't end up with two copies of the person in your database).
#RootsMagic will bring up the person's edit screen where you can enter any other information for the person. Click OK on this edit screen to return to the main screen.

== Adding a spouse, child, or parents ==

===Add spouse===
Choose this command to enter a spouse or unmarried partner for the highlighted person. Highlight the person you want to add a spouse to on the Person page, then click the plus toolbar button and select Add Spouse (or just click a person box on the Pedigree view or Family view that says Add Spouse).

To add a new person, just fill in the information the same as described in Adding an Individual above. The spouse or partner added will be of the opposite sex by default. To add a spouse or partner of the same sex, select the appropriate sex for the person on the Add Person dialog box when adding the new person.

If the spouse has previously been entered into your RootsMagic file, you can click the "Select Existing Person" tab on the left side of the "Add Spouse" form.

A list of everyone in your database will appear where you can choose the highlighted person´s spouse.

If you continue adding the spouse, RootsMagic will compare the person you add with people already in the database. If it finds any matches, it will bring up a dialog box warning that you may have already entered this person. You may continue adding the new person if the person doesn't match any of the existing people, or you may link to an existing person that RootsMagic found, or you may cancel (so you don't end up with 2 copies of the person in your database).

===Add child===

Choose this command to enter a child for the highlighted person. The child will be added to the couple currently displayed on the screen. If you want to add a child to a different spouse of the highlighted person, you can click the Spouses button in the information area at the top of the screen and select the other spouse first.

You can add the child exactly the same way as adding a spouse (above), with 1 exception. If the person you are adding the child to has more than one spouse (partner), you may select which family to add the child to from the drop list at the top of the Add Child form.

===Add parents===
Choose this command to enter parents for the highlighted person. Highlight the person you want to add parents to on the Person page, then click the plus toolbar button and select Add Parents (or just click a person box on the Pedigree view or Family view that says Add Father or Add Mother).

You can add the parent exactly the same way as adding a spouse (above). After adding the father you will be asked to add the mother.

You can have multiple sets of parents in RootsMagic. This is especially useful for those people who are adopted. If you have already entered a set of parents for an individual, you will be asked if you would like to add another set of parents to that person. Click Yes and follow the steps shown above to add parents.

After the parents are added, you will be able to set the relationship between the child and the parents in the Edit person window, if it is other than the default Birth relationship.

== Customizing the Add Person screen ==
By default, the Add Person dialog includes fields for three individual fact types, birth, death and burial. The fields which can be shown are Date, Place, and Description. The death description (cause of death) appears with the death field since the Description field is enabled for this fact, but doesn't appear by default for the birth and burial facts since the description field in not enabled by default.

You can customize which events are on the Add Person form through the Customize this form link. Click on the Customize this form link to open the dialog. The area in the center of the form lists the fact types currently selected. The dialog has buttons to let you add, remove or rearrange the order of these fact types.

*Add fact to form – This opens the Fact Types dialog to let you select additional fact types. (If you wish you could even design a new fact type, then select it.) Click Select to add a fact type, or Cancel to exit the dialog without adding a fact type.
*Move down and Move up – Use these buttons to rearrange the fact types, usually to arrange the new fact types in relation to those already there.
*Delete – If you add a fact type and later decide you no longer want it included on the Add Person dialog, highlight the fact type and click the Delete button to remove that fact type.
*OK and Cancel – Once you have the form set up the way you want it, click OK to save the changes, or Cancel to discard the changes.

== Possible duplicates ==
When you add a new person, RootsMagic checks when you click OK to see if there is a match between name of the new person and the names of those already in the database (as long as Check for duplicates when adding people is not disabled.) If there are possible duplicates, the Possible Duplicates dialog opens, asking "Is the person already in your file?"

The names of the possible duplicates are shown in the left column, and the details (facts and parents) associated with each person are displayed in the right column. Highlight each person in the left column in turn to see the details of that person. After you have reviewed the possible matches, you have two choices:

*Use person above as Child/Spouse/etc - This option will appear when adding a child, spouse, or parents, and lets you choose the selected person as the child, spouse, or parent rather than re-entering them.
*Continue adding new person – Select this option if none of the matches correspond to the new person you are adding. You will be taken to the Edit Person window for the new person to add additional facts or details.
*Cancel – Lets you cancel adding the new person rather than creating a duplicate. You will be returned to the main window.

Note: To add siblings, you would add one or both parents, then add the sibling as a child to those parents. If you are at the end of the ancestral line and you find a sibling, add a father with the surname only and add the sibling as a child to this person.

When you have two different databases open on screen at once, RootsMagic allows you to copy people from one database to another by dragging and dropping them. Simply click on a person on the Pedigree or Family view in one database and while holding the mouse button down, drag them onto the window of another database in either view. RootsMagic will ask which people you want to copy.

In addition, if you drop a person onto another person or an empty family slot (spouse, child, parent), RootsMagic will provide options to confirm linking the dragged person into the appropriate family. For example, if you drop a person on top of a person in the other database, RootsMagic will ask you if they are the same person. Or if you drop a person on an empty father slot in the other database, RootsMagic will ask if the dropped person is the father of the person in the other database. You can mark the checkbox if the question is true and RootsMagic will link the dragged people into the new database, or merge people who you confirm are the same.

Note: Family facts are only transferred if the couple sharing those facts are dragged together to the other database.
